tony nominations 2009

"Next to Normal," "Rock of Ages," "Shrek The Musical" and, the favorite, "Billy Elliot, The Musical" scored Tony nominations on Tuesday morning in the crucial category of best musical, while "Dividing the Estate," "God of Carnage," "Reasons to be Pretty" and "33 Variations" were nominated as the best new play of the 2008-09 Broadway season. "Billy Elliot" scored more nominations than any other show, with 15. In the crowded category of best revival of a play, "Joe Turner's Come and Gone," "Mary Stuart" and "Waiting for Godot" all got nomination nods, squeezing out Robert Falls' Goodman Theatre production of "Desire Under the Elms." Carla Gugino, the show's star, did not get a nomination for best actress in a play, even though that was widely expected.
