cinco de mayo history

cinco de mayo history
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated each year on, not surprisingly, May 5, and it is a fun day for kids to enjoy. The holiday is in honor of a battle in 1862, when Mexico fought against an invasion by the French. Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza led a force of 4,000 soldiers and was able to defeat a French army of twice as many men. The French occupation didn't end until 1866, but it inspired Mexicans and Mexican Americans. In the 1960's and 1970's, Cinco de Mayo became associated with efforts by Mexican Americans to get more respect in their American home. Today, Cinco de Mayo is widely celebrated by non-Mexicans as well as Mexican Americans.
