Although Whatcom County has not confirmed cases of the pandemic swine flu, the We
stern’s Student Health Center has experienced a 50 percent influx in visits and phone calls in the past two weeks.
Swine flu is a respiratory disease that causes symptoms similar to the seasonal flu, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue. Swine flu can also cause people to be more susceptible to other diseases, such as pneumonia.
Dr. Emily Gibson, director of Western’s Student Health Center, said the health center has conducted rapid tests for more than 100 cases of flu-like symptoms, but all of the tests came back negative.
