How do you pack the room at the annual Atherton Civic Interest League meeting? Put a discussion of the California High Speed Rail project on the agenda. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 people crowded the Jennings Pavilion at Holbrook-Palmer Park on Thursday evening, May 28, to hear from a panel of experts assembled by the league. If there were any high-speed rail supporters in the house, they kept that fact to themselves. The standing-room only audience listened politely to Mike Garvey and John Litzinger, public outreach consultants hired by the state's High Speed Rail Authority, but reserved their enthusiasm for panel members opposed to the current route that would send high-speed trains through the Caltrain corridor that bisects Atherton."We need to do this right," said attorney Gary Patton, laying out a case for why the rail authority's preferred route is the wrong way to go.

bully dog
You handled this well and it all sounds quite cozy. Don't anticipate problems. We would be tied up in knots of indecision if we worried about what's going to happen down the line. You want your dogs in the bedroom, and you've worked out a comfortable arrangement. Now follow the wisdom of the age-old idiom and let sleeping dogs lie.
My 3-year-old schnoodle's favorite perch is the window seat near my front door. When neighbors, especially those walking their dogs, pass by our house on the sidewalk, our dog goes crazy, growling and barking. Otherwise, she's sweet and docile as can be. Of course, her barking "works" — the offenders disappear as they continue on their way.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota judge is expected to decide whether a family can refuse chemotherapy for a 13-year-boy's cancer and treat him with natural medicine, even though doctors say it's effectively a death sentence.
With chemotherapy, Daniel Hauser has a 90 percent chance of surviving his Hodgkin's lymphoma, according to his cancer doctor. And without it?
"It is almost certain that he will die," said Dr. Bruce Bostrom, a pediatric oncologist at Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota. Bostrom, who diagnosed the disease, is an ally of the legal effort in southwestern Minnesota's Brown County to make Hauser submit to chemotherapy even though he and his parents believe it's potentially more harmful than the cancer itself.
District Judge John Rodenberg was expected to rule Friday on Brown County's motion.
